Robert Cavalier sieur de La Salle claimed the area of Missouri for France in
1682. It was inhabited by Native American people including the Osage and
Missouri. In 1803 the land passed to the United States as apart of the Louisiana
Purchase. Missouri became a "jumping off" place for those moving West. In
1821 the Missouri Compromise settled the question of slavery in the Missouri
Territory.
